One of the misconceptions I hear most frequently from prospective clients is that they feel they simply don't have the money to focus on web advertising & marketing. The problem with thinking like this, especially if you have an existing website, is that there are so many things you can do to improve your search engine results and visibility on the web for little to no money, if you have the knowledge.
Below, you'll find a few tips and tricks to help get your website found, and in the process, get your phone ringing with new business!
1. Make sure the keywords, description and title tags are filled out and accurate on all of your web pages. Having good 8 to 10 keywords, a short description and a title tag that has your business name, location and a bit of pertinent information can go a long way for results.
2. Add to and change your content! Having solid, descriptive page content is one of the best things you can do for your website. In addition, updating your content 2 or 3 times a month at the least will help with your rankings. Content that is stagnant and never-changing won't do you any favors.
3. Use photos properly. First, make sure the "alt" tag on each photo is properly filled out. Second, try to avoid having important words and statements that are flattened on images, especially if those words or phrases aren't used anywhere else on that page.
4. Name your files and images with good keyword-rich filenames. For example, naming a page "services.htm" isn't really going to help you, but naming that page "plumbing_services_new_york.htm" would be much better. The same goes for image files used on your page.
5. Try to get your site inbound links. Inbound links are when another website lists a link to your own page and a user follows it. This works great if you have friends or business associates with their own sites. Ask them to link to your site, and do the same for them in return. This will increase your traffic and improve your site's search engine results. Don't have any associates that would work for this? Well, start a few free pages and link to your own site! Blogs, Facebook, MySpace, etc. all work well for this.
